The Department of Archaeology and Art History’s 25^th Anniversary celebration ended with a reception and book signing in the lobby of the Schroeder Family School of Business Administration.  Attendees were able to purchase copies of Dr. Alan Kaiser’s book Archaeology, Sexism, and Scandal:  The Long-Suppressed Story of One Woman’s Discoveries and the Man Who Stole Credit for Them and even get him to personally sign them.  Everyone enjoyed the sweet treats with the highlight being the sheet cake graced with Dr. Kaiser’s book cover.

Department 25th Anniversary Saturday Events

After a night of festivities to celebrate the Department of Archaeology and Art History’s 25^th Anniversary, alumni and current students got together to network and share information.  The morning activities included a session led by Andrew Reinhard (94) and Andrea Kendrick (10) about careers in media and publishing, a Skype session with Nigel Hetherington, co-founder of Past Preservers, about media opportunities for archaeologists, as well as a “speed-networking” session where current students met with and asked questions of alumni who have found work in various fields.  This event was well-attended with students gaining new and valuable contacts from the alumni who generously donated their time. 

After a break for lunch everyone reconvened at the Smythe Lecture Hall in the Schroeder Family School of Business Administration to hear Dr. Alan Kaiser’s exciting lecture detailing his experience as he wrote his new book Archaeology, Sexism, and Scandal:  The Long-Suppressed Story of One Woman’s Discoveries and the Man Who Stole Credit for Them. The lecture hall was packed with not only university students and faculty but also many from the Evansville community. 

 

3 Majors Present at 2105 NCUR in Spokane

Archaeology/art history double  major Carly H., archaeology major Alyssa R. along with social studies education/classical studies double major Alex D., recently presented at the 2015 NCUR Conference in Spokane, WA.  Each student presented research in their related discipline.  The conference was held April 16-18 at Eastern Washington University with over 2,000 students from across the nation in attendance.

Department 25th Anniversary Alumni in Attendance

Alumni of the Department of Archaeology and Art History came from many corners of the country to support the department as they celebrated 25 years of archaeology despite the bad weather.  Andrew Reinhard (94) one of the program’s first graduates, may have missed the evening festivities due to the icy conditions but he made it in time to participate in the activities the next day.  Also on hand was alumna Andrea Kendrick (10) who was essential in helping Dr. Kaiser get his book published at Rowman and Littlefield.  Rachel Lawrence (12) arrived from Illinois and Evansville residents Stephanie Weinhart (07), Justin Grant (11), and Kaman Hillenbug (12) attended as well.  All those that attended were glad they made the trip.

Department 25th Anniversary Browning-Miller Intern in Attendance

Thanks to a generous donation by the Browning-Miller family the Department of Archaeology and Art History is able to invite a high-school senior interested in archaeology or art history to intern at the department in the spring semester.  This year’s internship was awarded to Kate H. from Evansville Day School.  Kate joined the department as they celebrated their 25^th anniversary.

Department 25th Anniversary Guest of Honor

A highlight of the 25-year celebration at May House on February 20^th, 2015 was having as guest of honor the daughter of UE professor emerita Mary Ellingson, Dr. Barbara Petersen and her husband Roger Petersen.  Mary Ellingson is the subject of Dr. Alan Kaiser’s book Archaeology, Sexism, and Scandal:  The Long-Suppressed Story of One Woman’s Discoveries and the Man Who Stole Credit for Them. Barbara, who lives in New York, talked to Dr. Kaiser over the course of his book writing but the two had never met.  At the event Barbara was overjoyed to finally see the book about her mother in print and to meet the author in person.  Barbara and Roger spent the evening talking to students and alumni and by the end of the night they were very impressed with all that they learned about the department. 

Department Celebrates 25 Years at UE

This post is the first of seven sharing the fantastic events commemorating the Department of Archaeology and Art History’s 25^th Anniversary.  Be sure to stay tuned for all of them.

It was a dark and stormy night on February 20^th, 2015 when the Department of Archaeology and Art History held their celebration at May House to recognize their 25^th Anniversary.  Despite the sleet and ice, the fundraiser at the president’s residence was well-attended and the crowd inside was warm and excited to be there.  Attendees learned about the Jezreel Expedition at the information table with current students Kelli D. and Morgan D. standing by to answer questions and share their experiences.   
 
 
 

Nearby they also had the chance to outfit the expedition with new tools at the Adopt-A-Tool station. 

 

 

 

 

In an adjoining room celebrants eagerly participated in the Silent Auction, “winning” such items as a Reitz Home behind-the-scenes tour, Dead Sea bath products, and Mesker Park Zoo passes. 

 

Enjoying his time in the spotlight was Dr. Alan Kaiser who spent the entire evening signing copies of his book Archaeology, Sexism, and Scandal:  The Long-Suppressed Story of One Woman’s Discoveries and the Man Who Stole Credit for Them for admiring fans of his work which included current students, alumni, students’ parents and UE colleagues.

Everyone got a chance to sample delicious Jezreel Valley Winery red and white wines and then had a chance to win them at the Wine Pull station. 

 

 

 

 

The evening was a great success and the department would like to thank all of our generous donors and volunteers who contributed to the event.
